Mosaic? MOSAIC!

I was scrolling Threads (my current fave social platform) last week and was stopped dead in my tracks by a post.

I literally laugh out loud when people ask me what I do for a living. It’s not exactly a complicated answer, but if you don’t know me well, it takes a lot to explain. Coaches and therapists have helped me over the years with terms like “multi-passionate” or saying “you know a lot about a lot!” But those never really struck a chord.

Then, as I’m laying in bed, scrolling, I get hit with a lightning bolt:

When I say I lifted myself up in shock, that’s exactly what happened.

A mosaic is the perfect description for what I do. I have lots of parts and pieces to my work, but they all form together to make one beautiful work of art. Yes, I do Reiki healing, but I also heal during yoga classes and coaching sessions. Yes, I am cleaning out my barn, am an avid thrifter and reseller, but I also find lots of things to donate to the metaphysical store I work for. Yes, I speak on stages, but I also have people take deep breaths to regulate their nervous systems.

Now, this isn’t an open call to begin this type of business (unless you are called to), but it is an invitation to be seen. None of us are just one thing. I have clients who are farmers and yoga students. A computer analyst who is an avid bowler. A mom who knows all about gourmet wine. Living with all the parts of us shining forth is so beautiful.

I am convinced on of the worst questions to be asked is “what do you do for a living?” We ask little kiddos what they want to be when they grow up. Why aren’t we asking what makes them happy or fulfills them?

Another important part of having names and identifying things is that we feel weird when things aren’t labeled correctly or we cant find the right terms. A quick story on this…

When I was just out of grad school, I worked for a major land-grant college in their Extension Education division. The work I was doing—in the realm of Family and Consumer Sciences—was being absorbed by other departments at their college. So, we as educators lost the title “CFS Educator” because CFS didn’t exist. One of the reasons I left that job is because the administration didn’t feel we were important enough to warrant creating new titles or finding one that fit.

The weight of our words is so important. One huge part of manifestation is speaking what you want to be. I started calling myself Coach Laura before I ever felt qualified to coach anyone. When a woman is pregnant, we deem her mom before she ever has to start parenting. My friends with gender or sexuality questions, I see you and recognize how hard it must be to define yourself in certain contexts.

What does all of this boil down to? We each GET to design the mosaics of our life and our work. If you’re like me, the most midwestern person with a love of gangsta rap or a mom who doesn’t love kids (mine, just not in large groups).
